Successful Cases in 2022:

(37) Compensation Payment for Lost Property - we successfully secured £303 compensation from our client’s prison for the negligent loss of his property.

(36) Employment as a Painter - after several months of being denied a suitable employment role by his prison, which would have improved our client’s mental health, we assisted our client with securing a position as a painter.

(35) Compensation Payment for Lost Property - we successfully secured £188 compensation from our client’s prison for the negligent loss of his property.

(34) Compensation Payment for Lost Property - we successfully secured £45 compensation from our client’s prison for the negligent loss of his property parcel, after they failed to properly label it when they posted it on his behalf.

(33) Assisted a Client with Obtaining D-CAT - after many months of applying for our client’s re-categorisation, he was successfully progressed to CAT-D.

(32) Acceptance onto Social Sciences Foundation Degree Course - we assisted our client with enrolling on a social sciences module in his establishment. Following his positive engagement with the module and academic success, we are thrilled that he has now been accepted on a Social Sciences fully-funded degree programme, which he will be able to complete within his establishment.

(31) Transfer Following Disability Neglect - we successfully secured a transfer for a client whose previous establishment had been failing to provide sufficient care to manage his disabilities. He is now receiving greatly improved care and adjustments.

(30) Adjudication Appeal Dismissal Review by the Secretary of State - after months of challenging our client's prison, we convinced them to submit his adjudication appeal dismissal for review by the Secretary of State. A small win for our client who was fed two maggots in two separate meals in his prison, on the same day, causing severe food poisoning and anxiety. He was told by officers 'some things get through the net', in response to his complaints. Our client shouted out in agony when officers refused to take him to healthcare after the meals, resulting in the adjudication. Should the review not lead to the dismissal of this wholly unfair adjudication, we shall progress this matter to the PPO.

(29) Approved Parcel - secured approval from our client’s Governor, after months of resistance and refusals, for our client to have an additional clothing parcel sent in by his family, after many of his belongings were lost and damaged by others in his establishment, and he was left with almost no clothing.

(28) Compensation for the Unlawful Retention of Cash Property - secured a £23587 settlement for a client whose cash property in excess of that sum was unlawfully retained by the police for over twelve years.

(27) Compensation for Data Breach - secured a £2200 settlement for a client whose personal and restricted data was negligently sent by his prison to another prisoner, threatening his safety and security.

(26) Compensation for Lost Property - secured a £3615 County Court judgment in favour of our client, for his prison’s negligent loss of his property during transfer.

(25) Compensation for Personal Injury - secured a £650 settlement of compensation for a client who was badly burned by prison officers when they recklessly and negligently administered boiling water to him, through his cell hatch, via a rolled up piece of plastic.

(24) Compensation for Lost Property - secured a £668 settlement of compensation for a client who was transferred from his cell without warning and, due to officers negligently failing to lock his cell during the transfer, had his property stolen and damaged.

(23) Adjudication Dismissal - our client relayed to his brother that his cell mate possessed a knife and that our client was fearful for his life. Our client’s brother alerted our client’s prison, which then decided our client was complicit (without any evidence proving the same). Our client was subsequently adjudicated and punished. We assisted our client with obtaining phone call records that would reveal the conversation he had with his brother, and prove his innocence. This evidence led to the dismissal of our client’s adjudication.

(22) Compensation for the Unlawful Release of Money - assisted a client in securing a £1551 payment from the police, to compensate for them negligently releasing his money to another individual (who did not transfer it to our client), without his consent.

(21) Compensation for Lost Property - secured a £200 compensation settlement for property negligently lost by our client’s prison.

(20) Removal of Full Contact Restrictions - two of our clients are a married couple of ten years. Having resided in the same prison from when they started their sentences, they were suddenly sent to separate prisons, without warning or explanation, and all contact between them was prohibited by their prisons. This had a profoundly devastating impact on both of our clients’ mental health. We successfully negotiated with their prisons, enabling them to now send at least one permitted letter to each other per month.

(19) Compensation for Unlawful Parole Delays - secured £150 compensation for a client whose Parole Review was unlawfully delayed for more than a year.

(18) Payment Plan Postponement - our client’s establishment started a payment plan to deduct money from our client’s account, without his consent. Our client’s establishment deducted this money due to a court judgment made against our client. However, our client was not made aware that he was a Defendant in any court proceedings, and had no opportunity to defend the claim or appeal the judgment. We successfully encouraged our client’s prison to stop deducting money from our clients account whilst we assisted our client with appealing the judgment.

(17) Access to Pain Medication - encouraged our client’s prison to increase his pain medication to his original and prescribed dose, after they reduced it due to allegations our client was involved in drug trading, causing him prolonged and severe pain. This reduction was actioned despite there being no evidence to support the allegations.

(16) Meal Replacement Drinks - assisted our client with securing a prescription for meal replacement drinks, eight months after they had been recommended by several medical practitioners. Our client was unable to eat solid food and his prison refused to prescribe him a soft food diet, leading to dangerous weight loss during the eight months our client’s prison also refused to give him drinks (on financial grounds and unsubstantiated fears he would trade them).

(15) D-Cat Progression - assisted our client with progression to open conditions after his progression had been delayed for eighteen months, purely due to his prison failing to provide the information they were required to provide at his review meetings.

(14) Amendment of False OaSys Information - secured the amendment of our client’s OaSys, which contained false information related to his offence. The false information made his offence appear excessively violent, and prejudiced his ability to progress.

(13) Access to Matchstick Cutter - successfully overturned our client’s Governor’s decision to confiscate his matchstick cutter, which had been enforced for over eleven months, despite it not being a prohibited item and despite there being no allegations that our client was abusing his privilege to possess this item. Our client used the cutter to create artwork in his cell; a hobby that had a profoundly positive impact on his mental health.

(12) Prison Transfer to Enable Family Visits - secured a prison transfer for a client from an establishment that left her unable to see her family and children for over a year, to an establishment that would enable them to visit.

(11) Compensation for Lost Property - secured a £300 settlement for the loss of our client’s property by his establishment, after three years of them failing to properly address his complaints.

(10) County Court Judgment for Lost Wedding Suit - a District Judge ruled that our client’s prison was liable for the loss and/or unlawful retention of his wedding suit, from when he was married in his prison.

(9) Retrieved Property from the Police - facilitated the location and return of several items of property belonging to our client, that had been seized and withheld for over two years.

(8) Medical Expert Report - assisted a client who was a litigant-in-person in a county court claim, and who had faced considerable difficulty in finding a medical expert to agree to write a report on his injury (as most refused to assist litigants-in-person), obtain the essential report to progress his case that was CPR compliant.

(7) Prison Transfer due to Disability Discrimination - secured a transfer for a client from a prison that failed repeatedly to make reasonable adjustments for his disability.

(6) Medical F35 Extension - our client had a shrapnel injury to his foot, and was unable to walk unless he was permitted to wear flip flops, as usual shoes would cause him immense pain. Prison officers repeatedly refused to allow our client to wear flip flops, despite medical exemptions, to punish him; knowing that it would force him to remain in his cell permanently and thus deprive him of food and exercise. We assisted our client with extending his F35 medical exemption to wear flip flops in his prison, to help prevent officers from continuing to do this.

(5) Medical Records Disclosure - obtained disclosure of our client’s records after his and his solicitor’s requests for disclosure had been ignored for over a year. The disclosure has enabled us to write to his prison addressing the medical negligence he has suffered.

(4) Name Change - assisted our client with successfully changing his name (his originally name being a target for attack from fellow residents) after numerous of his previous applications were delayed, ignored and unprocessed by his prison.

(3) Enrolment on Progression Course - facilitated the enrolment of our client on an oversubscribed course that was essential for his progression towards release, and ensured he avoided all delays with commencing the course.

(2) Specialist Wing Transfer - secured the transfer of our client to a specialist unit that had advanced resources to manage his autism.

(1) MP Assistance - enlisted the assistance of Jeremy Corbyn MP, who sent a formal complaint to our client’s prison addressing multiple instances of abuse including racism, physical and verbal abuse and loss of property.
